I feel my fellow pharmacists will be concerned about products getting tagged inappropriately. How does the checking process between techs and pharmacists work at other institutions?
Once a Tech has associated the medications and tags, the meds are in the ‘restricted’ status. A pharmacist may verify that the medications were properly tagged by comparing the Manufacturer label’s printed expiration date and lot number by following the same Pharmacist Vefiraction When multiple items are blue-box scanned, or a single item is scanned with the hand-held, the pharmacist is shown the expiration date and lot number associated with the restricted drug. If that matches what they can visually see on the vial, they can verify the drug.

Our pharmacy techs print detailed tags and our pharmacist use those detailed tags NDC, lot, exp as a means to double-check the medication product. How can they do this moving forward?
While the KitCheck tag, basic or detailed, is a fit-for-purpose tool for tracking medications, their locations, and their expirations – when it comes to final verification of non-expiration before administration to a patient, it is best practice and we strongly recommend that any provider, tech, or other personnel use the manufacturer label’s printed expiration date. The manufacturer label is the final source of truth. Many hospitals that have switched to Basic Tags prefer that the expiration date is not on the Basic Tag because it forces the personnel to use the manufacturer label as is best practice.

How will this affect the ability/need to have a new Kit tag built or an old Kit tag re-printed?
Creating Kit Tags with Basic Tags has a different workflow. You can see this in this eLearning Module/Document
