Sentara Health Saves $1M Five Months After Replacing Wholesaler Tool With New Software Investment

Sentara faced the challenge of optimizing drug spend without burdening staff with a manual, time-consuming approach. At the time, the health system relied on reports from their wholesaler analytics platform and GPO which required a manual review of savings opportunities and separate communications to each of its 12 hospitals. Tracking actual savings from this method required additional calculations and monitoring from the pharmacy team as well. Balancing these inefficient processes and time constraints, Sentara didn’t experience much value from the workflow and ultimately only made changes for a select few items.

Seeking a more efficient tool to help achieve annual cost savings targets, they explored several analytics programs, initially most interested in finding a tool capable of detecting overcharges and simplifying credit and rebill processes. Evaluating CostCheck was seamless for Sentara, due to being a Bluesight customer (i.e., KitCheck and ControlCheck) and having an existing data feed set up to demonstrate all of the available savings opportunities.
