Shifting Perceptions of Pharmacists' Role

It’s all-hands-on-deck time in hospitals across the country—and around the world—as we combat the COVID-19 pandemic. So it’s more important than ever that we realize the incredibly important role that pharmacists have in patient care. They are more than just prescribers of drugs. With their expert knowledge of drugs, usage, dosage, interactions, and more, pharmacists play a crucial part in presenting treatment options to sick patients.

In recent years there has been a push to recognize pharmacists as providers at the state level. Ohio and Texas have both passed legislation allowing pharmacists to claim provider status. And it makes sense: pharmacists hold advanced degrees from medical school and are uniquely positioned as the medication experts in the hospital to be on the front lines of treatments in terms of efficacy and safety.

We hope to see more and more states adopting legislation to give provider status to pharmacists. Not  only will it have a financial impact pharmacy staff, hopefully drawing more students to the profession, but it would also have a huge impact on patient care—which is something that everyone can support, both now and in the future.
